FILLIES OPEN 2009 WITH 2 WINS

The Panola Fillies opened up the new year with a pair of wins over non-conference opponents this weekend. Sunday, the Fillies traveled to Ranger College to play a game that was originally scheduled for Nov. 19th. The Panola ladies came away from Sunday's contest with a 94-54 win. Sophomore Kayla Weaver led all scorers with 24 points. She was joined in double figures by freshman Lennea Alston and sophomore Niya Santiago, who each netted 13.

Monday afternoon, the ladies took on the junior varsity squad of East Texas Baptist University, coming away with a 77-58 win. "Today's game was a good test of our ability to focus despite less than ideal circumstances," noted head coach Tracey Stellato, "and I had hoped that we would execute alot better, but we still have alot of work to do." After Sunday's contest with Ranger the Fillies were forced to spend the night after encountering transportation troubles after the game. They arrived home at 4:00pm on Monday afternoon, with the tip-off for Monday's contest set for 5:30pm. Sophomore Niya Santiago led the Fillies with 14 points and Katy McCoy, a freshman from Bossier City, LA, had her best offensive showing to date, netting 11 points on the night.

The Fillies open up conference play this Wednesday at Paris, when they will face the Lady Dragons. The Fillies will return home on Saturday. Jan. 10th for a non-conference game against Arkansas Baptist. Tip-off time is set for 2:00pm. Come out and support the Fillies in 2009.

PANOLA LADIES DOWN APACHE LADIES

The Panola Fillies picked up a big conference road win Saturday night when they downed the Apache ladies of Tyler Junior College 91-83. Freshman guard Tiffany Eubank led all scorers with 32. "Tyler really shot the ball well during the first half from beyond the arc," noted head coach Tracey Stellato, "and we were doing a poor job of rotating quickly on defense." The Fillies went into the locker-room at the half trailing 43-49 after sophomore Kelsey Harris knocked down a 3 as time expired in the first half. "Defensively, I thought we were a little better in the second half, but we are still a work in progress," added Stellato. Eubank was joined in double figures by Kayla Weaver and Larysa Latashava, who each contributed 11, and Kelsey Harris that chipped in 10 on the night. The win improves the Fillies conference record to 2-1. The Fillies are set to close out the fall semester Saturday afternoon with a match-up against the perennial conference favorite Lady Cards of TVCC. Tip-off time is set for 2:00pm. Come out and support the Fillies this Saturday.

FILLIES OPEN CONFERENCE PLAY WITH WIN

The Panola Fillies opened up Region 14 conference play Saturday afternoon with a 72-71 win over the Lady Rangers of Kilgore College. Kayla Weaver rebounded a Lady Ranger carom with 0.8 seconds that sealed the Fillies' win over previously unbeaten Kilgore. Tiffany Eubank, a freshman from Lubbock, TX, led all scorers with 23. She was joined in double figures by sophomore point guard Niya Santiago, who added 12 and freshman Tatsiana Zhurauliova, who chipped in 11. "We struggled offensively at times tonight, but we made some key plays at the right times that put us in a position to win," noted head coach Tracey Stellato. Kilgore led by as many as 10 in the second half but the Fillies battled back and led by as many as 8 late in the game. "We knew that they would keep coming, and they did," added Stellato, "but we were fortunate to get some key stops and big buckets at the right time." The Fillies take to the hardwood again on Tuesday night when they travel to Brenham to take on the Lady Bucs of Blinn College. The Fillies will return home on Saturday, November 29th for a non-conference match-up with Southern University of Shreveport. Tip-off time for the Saturday's game will be 2:00pm.

PANOLA FILLIES ECLIPSE CENTURY MARK AGAIN

The Panola Fillies broke the century mark for their second straight home contest, downing the visiting East Texas Baptist University Lady Tigers, 117-59. Twelve out of fourteen Fillies broke into the scoring column with Kayla Weaver leading the charge with 21. Tiffany Eubank turned in another solid performance knocking down 17 points and hauling down 6 rebounds.  Sophomore point guard Kelsey Harris added 16 on a solid shooting night from the floor, going a combined 6-8, while dishing out 5 assists. Niya Santiago, sophomore from South Plainfield, NJ also had a great night from the field, netting 5 of 6 shots, and handed out 8 assists on the night. Freshman post Tatsiana Zhurauliova posted her first double double on the young season, notching 10 points, while pulling down 11 rebounds.  Freshman guard Katie McCoy broke the double figures barrier for the first time against the Lady Tigers, chipping in 10 points to go along with 5 rebounds. The Fillies are set to open up conference play on Saturday at Kilgore when they will take on the Lady Rangers at 2:00pm. The Fillies' non-conference game against Ranger College, set for Wednesday, November 19th, had to be rescheduled for a later date. PANOLA LADIES STUMBLE AGAINST TEMPLE

The Fillies could not hold off a late second half run by the Temple College Lady Leopards and fell 85-96 on the road in Temple on Saturday. Action for Saturday's game was back and forth 35 minutes. With 5:15 to play, the scored tied at 74-74, the Lady Leopards distanced themselves from the Fillies, outscoring the Panola ladies 22-11 over the last 5 minutes. "We just made some poor decisions late in the game, and failed to take control of the the defensive boards, which is a recipe for defeat," noted head coach Tracey Stellato. Despite the loss, the Fillies placed 4 players in double figures. Tiffany Eubank, a freshman from Lubbock, TX  had a solid game. She netted 19 points, hauled in 10 rebounds and snatched 5 steals. "I thought Tiffany had her best game so far as a Filly. She just made plays on both ends of the floor and really did an exceptional job on the offensive glass for us," remarked head coach Tracey Stellato. Eubank was joined in double figures by Kayla Weaver and Tatsiana Zhurauliova, a freshman from Minsk, Belarus, each posting 13 points. Jacquelyn Hearne, a freshman from Hallsville, TX had her best offensive outing of the season, chipping in 11 points. The Fillies return home Monday night to face the East Texas Baptist University JV squad. Tip-off time for Monday's contest is 5:30pm in Arthur Johnson Gymnasium.

FILLIES CAPTURE HOME OPENER 107-49

The Panola Fillies captured their home opener by breaking the century mark for the first time this season with a 107-49 win over Ranger College. Wednesday's win saw all 14 Fillies crack the scoring column.  Kayla Weaver, a sophomore from Aquilla , TX led all scorers with 25. She also hauled down 10 rebounds for her first double double of the season. Weaver was joined in double figures by Niya Santiago, a sophomore transfer from Fairfield University, who netted 15 on the night. "Our win over Ranger was much needed," noted head coach Tracey Stellato, "we had much better effort tonight from the tip, which helped us get going both offensively and defensively." All 14 Fillies broke into the scoring column, with 3 players notching 9 points on the night. The Fillies travel to Temple College on Saturday to face the Lady Leopards in a non-conference match-up. They will return home on Monday, November 17 for a game against the East Texas Baptist University JV squad. Tip-off will be 5:30pm in Arthur Johnson Gymnasium.

 

GIRL'S BASKETBALL CAMP CANCELLED

Girl's basketball camp, originally scheduled for June 2-5 has been cancelled due to limited interest. Any girls interested in attending camp are welcome to join boy's basketball camp June 9-12.  Camp is open to boys and girls ages 8-14. EIGHT FILLIES MOVING ON

As the 2007-08 academic year draws to a close, seven Panola Fillies have made their decisions regarding their future schools and basketball programs.  Kim Edmonson, leading scorer for the Fillies this season, will head back home to Louisiana, where she will suit up for NCAA Division I Southeastern Louisiana University next season. Casie Adams will head west to San Angelo, TX where she will be joining the Rams of Angelo State. ASU competes in the NCAA Division II Lone-Star Conference.  Three Fillies are heading north to Shawnee, OK and Oklahoma Baptist University.  Lauren Rust, Jasmine Brown and Vedrana Milakovic will all be representing the Lady Bison of OBU next season. Oklahoma Baptist University competes in the NAIA Division I Sooner Athletic Conference. Melissa White will also be heading north as she will take the court for Oklahoma City University next season. Oklahoma City also competes in the Sooner Athletic Conference, so Fillies will clash with Fillies next season. Satara Harrell, sophomore from Cedar Hill, TX, will be suiting up for Jay Bowen's Lady Tigers of East Texas Baptist University next season. Valentina Cora, a freshman from Vicenza, Italy, will be moving on to Lindsey Wilson College in Kentucky.  "We thank each of these young ladies for all of their hard work this past season and wish them nothing but tremendous success as they continue their playing careers beyond Panola College."

FOUR PANOLA FILLIES PICK UP POST-SEASON HONORS

Four Panola Fillies capped off the 2007-08 campaign by picking up some post-season honors.  Kim Edmonson, sophomore from Many, La, and the Region 14 points per game leader, captured All-Region and All-Conference awards for her superlative effort this season.  In addition to those regional awards, Edmonson was voted Honorable Mention NJCAA All-American.  "Kim did an outstanding job of giving us offensive production every single night. She was in the top 10 in 5 different statistical categories for our region, which just goes to show you have valuable she was to our success this season," noted head coach Tracey Stellato.  Joining Edmonson on the Region 14 All-Conference team were Jasmine Brown and Vedrana Milakovic.  "We were really blessed with a tremendous sophomore class in terms of maturity, work ethic and willingness to give whatever was necessary for success," added Stellato. Jasmine Brown knocked down 8 treys in 3 separate games during the 07-08 campaign. "Jasmine has one of the prettiest strokes I've ever seen and she does a tremendous job of spreading the defense with her ability to knock down the 3-pointer with such consistency. Vedrana was just the heart and soul of our team this year.  She is hard-nosed, tough, mature and willing to lay her body on the line for the team. She has been such a joy to coach for the past 2 seasons because she is just the ultimate team player.  Lauren Rust also picked up some post-season recognition by being named to the Academic All-Conference squad, along with Jasmine Brown. Academic all-conference honorees must carry a 3.25 GPA.  "Each of these young ladies did a tremendous job for our program all the way around this season. Their contributions on the court will be missed, but more importantly they will be missed for the exceptional young ladies that they are."

PANOLA FILLIES OPEN UP REGIONAL TOURNAMENT PLAY FRIDAY

The Panola Fillies will open up Region 14 tournament play on Friday night at Kilgore College when they face off against the Lady Roadrunners of Angelina College. The Fillies closed out the regular season Tuesday with an overall record of 20-10 and are seeded 5th in the post-season tournament. Angelina comes into Friday night's match-up with an identical overall mark, but are seeded 4th based on conference standings. Friday night will feature two women's quarter-final match-ups with Panola and Angelina tipping off at 6:00pm. In the second game, the TJC Apache ladies will square off against Jacksonville College in a match-up of the 3rd and 6th seeds. Winners from Friday night will face either Trinity Valley or Blinn College on Sunday in the semi-final round. The championship game of the Region 14 tournament will be Monday night, with the winner earning an automatic bid to the NJCAA national tournament in Salina, KS.  Come out and support the Fillies as they make a run at the Region 14 tournament championship this weekend.

FILLIES HONOR EIGHT SOPHOMORES

On Tuesday night, eight Panola Fillies played their final game in the friendly confines of Arthur Johnson Gymnasium. Looming on the horizon is the Region 14 post-season tournament, but the Fillies took time out tonight to honor these young ladies as they took to the floor one last time at home. "Each of these young ladies has come into our program and worked extremely hard and we just wanted to take time out tonight to recognize them and say thank you for that," commented head coach Tracey Stellato. Members of the 2008 sophomore class include: Melissa White, Midlothian-TX; Jasmine Brown, Jersey Village-TX; Casie Adams, The Colony-TX; Lauren Rust, Waxahachie-TX; Satara Harrell, Cedar Hill-TX; Vedrana Milakovic, Upplands Vasby-Sweden; Kim Edmonson, Many-LA; and Brittany Chavers, Denton-TX. In two seasons, this group of young ladies have posted a 41-21 overall record, advanced to the semi-finals of the 2007 Region 14 tournament and are set to open up the 2008 Region 14 tournament this weekend. "Overall, we have been successful on the basketball court, but I also feel that this group of young ladies has represented our program and our school in an exemplary fashion over their two-year careers here. They will be missed," added Stellato.

Come out and cheer them on again this weekend when they open up the regional tournament Friday night against Angelina College at Kilgore College. Tip-off time is set for 6:000pm.
