M. P. Baker Library Expansion Project

When the M. P. Baker Library opened in the fall of 1966, 571 students were enrolled at Panola College.  Since then the College has grown steadily. In fact, this fall Panola College set an all-time enrollment record that more than tripled the number of students enrolled at Panola College in 1966. Today the M. P. Baker Library provides an array of services to approximately 1900 students, a growing Health Science Center, and the citizens of Panola, Shelby, Marion and Harrison counties.

In 1990 and again in 2000, Panola College’s accrediting body, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, stated that the M. P. Baker Library was too small to meet the needs of the student population. They recommended at the conclusion of both visits that the facility be increased in size. The problem has become even more acute when you consider that the student population has increased by 25 percent since 2000.

Expanding the M. P. Baker Library will increase and enhance the learning resources currently offered. The new addition is necessary to add shelving space, computer labs, classrooms, a multi-purpose community room, and study rooms where students can meet and exchange ideas without disturbing other library patrons.

Local civic organizations and community leaders have thrown their support behind this project. They understand that Panola College provides the citizens of East Texas with an affordable alternative to larger, more expensive four-year colleges and universities, supplies area businesses with a better trained workforce, and contributes to the richness and culture of our communities through the numerous musical, fine art, and theatrical productions presented at the College.

Gifts can be made in honor or in memory of friends or family members. A Donor Wall will record the names of those who give $1000 or more, and naming opportunities exist to honor those who wish to contribute toward the construction of specific rooms or areas of the library.

Donations should be made to the Panola College Foundation. The Panola College Foundation is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization, and all gifts are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Gift commitments can be fulfilled over a three year time period.
